In its 1998 National Directory of Conservation Land Trusts, the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) defines a land trust as a "nonprofit organization that, as all or part of its mission, works to conserve land by undertaking or assisting direct land transactions - primarily the purchase or acceptance of donations of land or easements." The following list of land trusts includes those national, multi-state, statewide and local land trusts that are directly involved in land-saving action in Georgia. This list also separates those land trusts that just hold one tract of land ("passive land trusts") from those that are actively seeking to protect more land ("active land trusts"). Finally, this list identifies in bold typeface those land trusts that have demonstrated a professional level of practice by having adopted the LTA's Land Trust Standards and Practices.
